Numbers 2
Numbers 2 opens with the LORD speaking “to Moses and Aaron, saying, ‘The people of Israel shall camp each by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers’ houses. They shall camp facing the tent of meeting on every side’” (2:1-2). The rest of the chapter outlines the specific areas in which the tribes would reside. “Thus did the people of Israel. According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they camped by their standards, and so they set out, each one in his clan, according to his fathers’ house” (2:34).
Isn’t it interesting to consider that, at the end of a day’s journey, the Israelites camped facing the place where God would dwell? Perhaps this was God’s way of reminding them that they were to keep Him as the focal point of their lives. Or, after a long day, God’s people were prompted to recall their Sustainer’s faithful provision and protection. Whatever the rationale, let us endeavor to keep our spiritual eyes continually focused on God, as we can endure on the hard, narrow path that leads to life much more gracefully when we do.
It’s also noteworthy that each tribe accepted its lot from God without grumbling. You would have thought that some may be prone to complain that another family’s temporary acreage carried with it more favorable conditions or circumstances. Maybe their area was in a shady spot or smoother terrain. Yet there seemed to be contentment with the space allotted to each group. In our day, we cannot explain why God gives more resources to some than He does to others (including us). Even still, our hearts should be at peace with what has been entrusted to us by our Creator, knowing He faithfully provides just what we need to accomplish His will.
Finally from our reading today, we circle back to a prophecy by Jacob to his son, Judah, from Genesis 49. You may recall that Jacob told Judah, “The scepter shall not depart from [you], nor the ruler’s staff from between [your] feet…” (Genesis 49:10). In Numbers 1, the tribe of Judah was noted as being the most numerous. Then, in chapter 2, it is stated in verse 9 that the people of Judah and their company “shall set out first on the march.” David Guzik comments, “Judah encamped foremost. It was fit the lion should lead the way…. This order in their march showed the principality that should continue in this tribe till Shiloh came. Judah herein also was a type of Christ, who is ‘the Captain of the Lord’s host,’ (Joshua 5:14) and ‘of our salvation,’ (Hebrews 2:10) and goeth before his heavenly armies (Revelation 12:7).”[i] As I’ve written about so many times before, the pages of the Bible really come alive and connect when you have a full counsel of God’s holy, inspired Word.
