Numbers 29
Today, we continue reading through God’s commands for offerings that were to be brought during appointed times throughout the year. Specifically, instructions about offerings for the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Booths are articulated. Interestingly, “There were more sacred solemnities in the seventh month than in any other. It was the space between harvest and seed-time. [This reminds us that the] more leisure we have from the pressing occupations of this life, the more time we should spend in the immediate service of God.”[i]
After commanding His people to bring forth these various offerings, God closes by stating, “These you shall offer to the LORD at your appointed feasts, in addition to your vow offerings and your freewill offerings, for your burnt offerings, and for your grain offerings, and for your drink offerings, and for your peace offerings” (v. 39). There is no doubt that Israel’s obedience to what God outlined in Numbers 28-29 would cost them a great deal. Annually, “the priests sacrificed at least 1,086 lambs, 113 bulls, 32 rams, more than a ton of flour, and some 1,000 bottles of oil and wine on behalf of the nation.”[ii] This is a huge sum of provisions that may have overwhelmed those doing the math in their heads while Moses was speaking on behalf of God.
Recently, God has been reminding me that His provisions often come in ways that are beyond my comprehension. My tendency has been to seek God when facing an insurmountable task (like the Israelites here), but my approach toward Him in these moments has been to put Him in a figurative box from which I expect Him to operate. However, every time I try to do so, He comes through in ways that I never could have imagined. For the Israelites, yes, doing what God commanded in these last two chapters would be a monumental undertaking. But the kindness of God is such that, while specifying these large quantities of sacrifices, He was also promising to provide them with all they needed to obey. Friends, for those in Christ, God still gives us everything we need to obey…He gives us Himself to live inside of us! God once again making a way where there was no way (in our finite minds).
Before we close, note Moses’s responses to God’s commands in verse 40 (emphasis added): “So Moses told the people of Israel everything just as the LORD had commanded...” Israel’s appointed leader didn’t shy away from telling God’s people exactly what was required of them, even though the cost would be high. This is a reminder to those in leadership positions that we are to convey the totality of a message God puts on our hearts to those entrusted to our care, regardless of how well received it may be. Let it be said that our allegiance is to our Creator, not His creation.

Specifically, I challenge you to look back over your responses to the questions asked at the end of each day’s readings and ponder the following:
· What did God reveal to you about Himself this past week?
· What did God reveal to you about yourself this past week?
· Were there any specific words, phrases, or passages that helped you hear more clearly from God?
Spend whatever time (and more) that you carved out for your daily Bible reading to focus on these questions, and as God gives you wisdom, be sure to jot it down!
