O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
“Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee…”
Carl Boberg was caught in a sudden storm while walking home in Sweden. Thunder crashed, lightning split the sky—and then, just as suddenly, the storm passed. Calm returned. Birds began to sing again.
In that moment, something awakened in his heart: awe. The power of God, followed by His peace. The greatness of a God who commands storms—and quiets them.
This hymn was born not in a sanctuary, but in creation itself. It reminds us to pause, to notice, to let wonder rise again. Sometimes worship begins not with words—but with seeing.
Scripture: Psalm 19:1 — “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the expanse proclaims the work of His hands.”
Ask yourself:
- When was the last time you truly paused in awe of God?
- How does creation help you see God more clearly?
- What stirs your heart toward worship?
